Zukunft braucht Herkunft | Future needs Origins German Philospher Odo Marquardt

Together with partners John XIA and Cicy CHEN, Hartmut Esslinger founded the esslinger group to close the gap between music streaming in high-resolution recording quality, and ever more shoddy reproduction by so-called “smart speakers”. As no established brand-manufacturer was willing or capable to do this, Hartmut Esslinger decided to develop, build and sell his own all-in-one, high-end audio system – the s/one.

Having founded frog design in 1969 (www.frog.co since 2018 a part of Capgemini Invent), and having built it with his wife Patricia Roller into the World’s most successful design agency with today more than 2,500 creatives in 35 studios worldwide, Hartmut Esslinger always had a special passion for music and the devices bringing it to people’s ears and hearts

1969 - 1984: SONY-WEGA | Dieter Motte, Norio Ohga & Akio Morita

Aside of helping SONY to become a global consumer electronics leader by designing SONY’s “international style” for Trinitrons, Video and especially Audio-HiFi systems, Hartmut Esslinger also inspired many outstanding, technical innovations. With SONY and WEGA he co-designed the World’s first digital HiFi-Systems: LAB ZERO and
CONCEPT 51K, which included innovative modularity of components with differing product-lifecycles, incl. digital active speaker systems. In 1978, Hartmut Esslinger created the “frogpit” design study projecting a computerized audio system of minimal and evtl. wearable size. He then was part of the team which invented “wearable music” > the SONY WALKMAN line-up, which advanced from analog tape to digital music CD and solid-state content memory.

1982 - 2005 | Steve Jobs & Apple

Another milestone in Hartmut Esslinger’s career is his collaboration with Steve Jobs, starting in 1982. For Apple, he created a radically consumer-focused design and brand strategy, advancing Apple from “computing” into “digital consumer space”. The famous “Snow White Design DNA”, which included a 20-year-ahead vision – incl. a “Mac- Tray in the Pocket” and “Mac-Phones” - with hundreds of design studies and technical prototypes, he helped to advance Apple as a global leader by design – with Hartmut Esslinger’s influence visible to this very day.

1989 – 1993: FROX | Andy v. Bechtolsheim, Andy Hertzfeld, Susan Kare,Godehard Günther & Dieter Burmester

With Andy v. Bechtolsheim – co-founder of SUN Microsystems and Arista Networks – Hartmut Esslinger designed in 1989 the World’s first RISC-computing based audio amplifier including 16 DSPs, resulting in the sensational FROX amplifier with digital sound scaping of the World’s best concert halls.
The revolutionary, computer-based user-interface was designed with Andy Hertzfeld and Susan Kare of Apple Macintosh fame. German High-End pioneer Dieter Burmester advised on the sound design, and Dr. Godehard Guenther – a former NASA scientist - provided the matching active-speaker technology.
